Currently, I am in the process of building a modular synthesizer. The modular synthesizer community is quite strong in Portland, so I am fortunate to be living here as I experiment with this new direction. In fact, it is living here that encouraged me to begin this experiment. My hope is to explore that new instrument in a series of releases that will be in an EP length collection.
The design for this system is based around the concept of “West Coast” synthesis. There is a ton of information out there on the subject, but the basic premise is more complex oscillators with a great deal of modulation rather than the “East Coast” model of generally subtractive synthesis. I’m also planning on incorporating some concepts from musique concrète, processing incoming audio or previously recorded samples.
Once I’ve gotten the system more or less complete, I’ll post a video demonstration of the system and it’s general purpose as a sort of zero episode for the EP.
